Aug. 27, 2020 marks 60 years since Ax Handle Saturday; How you can honor the day

It’s been 60 years since one of the darkest days in Jacksonville’s history, Ax Handle Saturday. The Jacksonville Historical Society plans to honor the day in a virtual ZOOM event on Thursday Aug. 27 from 12 to 2 p.m.

The commemoration will be live streamed from James Weldon Johnson Park in downtown Jacksonville, the park formerly known as Hemming Park.

The commemoration is sponsored by the NAACP, the Center for Urban Education and Policy, Leadership Is For Everyone Inc. (LIFE), and a host of other individuals and companies.
