1 suspect dead, 9 transported after Ohio State University shooting

Police respond to reports of an active shooter on campus at Ohio State University on Monday, Nov. 28, 2016, in Columbus, Ohio. 

Multiple people are hurt after reports of a car with at least two people rammed into Watts Hall at Ohio State University, officials said. One person had a gun and another had a large knife, according to Columbus Dispatch.

What we know:

  • There were reports of an active shooter at Ohio State University.
  • The shelter in place was lifted at 11:32 a.m. by officials.
  • There are at least nine people reportedly taken to the hospital for treatment, including one that is critically injured.
  • Columbus SWAT has been called to the scene.
  • Two people have been brought out in handcuffs after active shooter reported on OSU campus, according to CBS News.
  • Classes has been canceled for the rest of the day Monday.

Update at 12:57 p.m.:

OSU President Michael Drake said suspect ran into a group of people with a car then got out and cut several others. Ohio State University spokesperson said OSU police engaged and shot the suspect. Injuries are not life threatening for the victims.

Update at 12:21 p.m.:

An Ohio State spokesman says injuries in the campus attack include stab wounds and being hit by a vehicle, according to the Associated Press.

Update at 11:54 a.m.:

A student told News Center 7’s Jim Otte the incident started around 10 a.m. Monday morning with a fire alarm. Students were outside when a vehicle jumped the curb, hit several people and the building.

The driver then jumped out of the car with a large knife. As students were scattering, they heard gunfire.

Update at 11:48 a.m.:

Ohio State President Michael Drake is expected to address the situation around 12:15 p.m.

Update at 11:37 a.m.:

Classes have been canceled at Ohio State for the remainder of the day. Shelter in place has also been lifted.

The Associated Press is reported the scene is secure.

Update at 11:31 a.m.

Facebook has activated its Safety Check feature. People in Columbus can check in here to alert family and friends they are safe.

Ohio Governor John Kasich tweeted “Ohio’s thoughts and prayers go out to the Ohio State community. Be safe, listen to first responders.”

Update at 11:09 a.m.

A suspect is confirmed dead following an active shooter at Ohio State.

There are reports there were also two people taken away in handcuffs.

Update at 11:04 a.m.:

The Lantern is reporting a possible remaining shooter that is believed to be inside the Lane Avenue Garage.

Update at 10:58 a.m.:

Students are reporting students were outside the building after a fire alarm went off, at which point a car drove through the crowd. They said gunfire followed.

Update at 10:52 a.m.:

Eight people have been transported to local hospitals, including one that is critically injured, according to CNN.

Photos from the scene show a body on the ground. Action News Jax's partner WHIO is working to confirm reports the body belongs to the shooter.

Students have been told to remain sheltered in place.

Update at 10:51 a.m.:

Student Alex Chutnak tweeted a picture of a body on the ground, saying it was of the active shooter. We are working to confirm those reports.

Update at 10:37 a.m.:

An eyewitness told CNN he saw people running and walked toward where people were running from, where he saw a body on the ground.

Another witness who spoke to CNN said he heard gunshots.

10TV is reporting Columbus SWAT has been called to the scene.

Update at 10:30 a.m.:

Injuries have been reported following reports of an active shooter on Ohio State University's campus.

The Lantern, Ohio State’s student newspaper, is reporting there’s at least one body bag present in front of Koffolt Labs. Networks in Columbus are reporting there are seven people transported to hospitals.

Students and staff have been told to continue to shelter in place and the incident is not over.

First Report:

There are reports of an active shooter at The Ohio State University.

A tweet sent from OSU Emergency Management just before 10 a.m. said "Buckeye Alert: Active shooter on campus. Run Hide Fight. Watts Hall. 19th and College."

Five minutes later, a second tweet was sent out, saying “Buckeye Alert: Continue to shelter in place. Avoid area of College. More information to follow.”

Middletown Police Chief Rodney Muterspaw tweeted a picture of the scene around Ohio State, saying his son sent him the picture.

“Active shooter at Ohio State. My son just sent me this picture. Run or fight. Never hide. Don’t give a shooter the advantage. #survive”
