Camper's head slashed by bear at campsite in middle of night

A camper at the Millard Campground in Altadena, California, was attacked by a bear Saturday in his tent.

The victim told investigators he was lying down at the campsite looking at his iPad when the bear clawed his head.

The incident occurred around 2 a.m., according to the Altadena Sheriff's Station.

The man had a severe cut and needed 18 stitches.

The California Department of Fish and Wildlife ordered the park closed from 72 hours after the incident.

Andrew Hughan, a spokesman for the department, told ABC News the incident is "very rare" and that the California black bear is "very docile. Very skittish. (It) doesn't want anything to do with humans."

The camper said he never saw the bear, but those nearby the campground saw the bear immediately after the attack.

Officers are now hunting for the bear. KTLA reported that a bear was captured Saturday, but it was not a match and was released.
