ATLANTA — Delta Air Lines has announced that it is laying off more than 800 contract employees due to the coronavirus.
“On Friday, a very tough but necessary decision was made to reduce contractor positions as Delta manages the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic to its business,” a spokesperson said.
AgileOne, which provides the contract workers, is working to inform hundreds of contractors that their work assignments at Delta will end but they “will have the opportunity to be placed within the AgileOne network.”
A Delta spokesperson said the contractors held roles in various technical and support groups.
CEO Ed Bastian explained the decision in a statement, which said, in part:
"Demand for travel is declining at an accelerated pace daily, driving an unprecedented revenue impact. Cancellations are rising dramatically with net bookings now negative for travel over the next four weeks. To put that in perspective, we’re currently seeing more cancellations than new bookings over the next month.
