Mega Millions: Winning ticket for $1.05B sold in Detroit suburb

One ticket in the Wolverine State matched all of the numbers in Friday’s $1.05 billion Mega Millions jackpot that was up for grabs, according to the lottery’s website.

Update 5:30 p.m. ET Jan. 23: The winning ticket was purchased at a Kroger store in the Detroit suburb of Novi, according to the Michigan Lottery.

“Someone in Michigan woke up to life-changing news this morning, and Kroger Michigan congratulates the newest Michigan multimillionaire,” Rachel Hurst, a regional spokeswoman for the grocery chain, told The Associated Press. She declined to comment further.

Original report: The winner is going to take home the third-largest lottery price in U.S. history.

The winning numbers are 4, 26, 42, 50, 60 and a Mega Ball of 24.

The Mega Millions top prize has been growing since Sept. 15, when a winning ticket was sold in Wisconsin.

Friday night’s winning draw comes two days after a ticket sold in Maryland matched all six numbers for a $731.1 million Powerball jackpot, according to The Associated Press.

Friday’s winner has the option to take the prize in an annuity that is paid in 30 annual installments. If the winner prefers the cash option, the total would be $739.6 million before federal and state taxes.

The odds of winning the jackpot were 1: 302,575,350.

There were 10 tickets that matched five numbers, according to the lottery site. Two were sold in Florida and New York, with other winners sold in Maryland, Missouri, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Those winners will receive $1 million each. Two tickets, in North Carolina and Virginia, had five numbers plus a Megaplier, giving them $2 million each.
