Recall alert: PetSmart discontinues Real Pet Food Co. dog food label after salmonella recall

PetSmart announced Wednesday afternoon that it has removed a popular dog food brand from both its shelves and online inventory in response to a voluntary recall.

Real Pet Food Co. is voluntarily recalling Billy+Margot Wild Kangaroo+Superfoods Recipe dog food because the product could be contaminated with salmonella, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

The 4-pound bags of dog food were sold nationwide and include the following lot code: V 07 Feb 2022, PennLive reported.

No illnesses related to the pet food have been reported to date, but salmonella in dog food can sicken not only dogs eating the food but the humans who handle the food as well, the news outlet reported.

According to the FDA, salmonella symptoms in humans include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever, while rare complications can include “arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation and urinary tract symptoms.”

Pets who become infected “may be lethargic and have diarrhea, fever, vomiting and or abdominal pain. Infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans,” the FDA stated.
