Deputies: Armed man shot by homeowner after trying to break into Lake City home with kids inside

LAKE CITY, Fla. — A man is in custody after deputies say he tried to break into a Lake City home with children inside and was shot twice by the homeowner.

Brandon Slywkanycz, 34, from Panama City Beach, is facing charges including attempted home invasion robbery, aggravated assault with a firearm, burglary of a structure while armed and grand theft of a firearm, according to a release from the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office.

The incident happened Saturday near Northwest Leonia Way, which is just north of where Interstate 75 and Interstate 10 intersect.

The homeowner told police that Slywkanycz tried to break into the home armed with a shotgun, according to the release.

Slywkanycz ran away after the homeowner shot him. Deputies later found him nearby with two gunshot wounds to his upper body.

He was taken to the hospital and will be booked into the Columbia County Detention Facility when he is released from the hospital.

“People have a right to protect themselves,” Sheriff Mark Hunter said in the release. “Incidents like this are extremely rare here, but I am glad that this resident was prepared to defend their home and family.”
