Friends grieve after St. Augustine man killed in downtown shooting

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. — Friends and family are grieving the loss of a young man who was gunned down outside Dos Gatos in St. Augustine early Saturday morning, police said.

Adam Amoia was supposed to be a groomsman in his best friend’s wedding the very same day he died, his friends told Action News Jax over the weekend.

Amoia’s friends are still in shock. They say he brought them all together. Now, they’re leaning on each other for support. “We have memories with him, just having a good time, doing shots. I just can’t believe that shots, metaphorically, are what’s taken him from us,” Charles Usina said.

The news came as a shock to Amoia’s closest friends.

Police say Amoia was shot and killed early Saturday morning after a fight outside Dos Gatos led to multiple gun shots.

Police say that type of violence in St. Augustine is so rare, there hadn’t been a reported shooting since 2018.

Amoia’s friends described him as a fun-loving, positive person whose goal was to keep people around him happy. “Us being here, we’re trying to remember him that’s what he would want us to do, not feel sad, not be mopey,” Kyle Nazario said.

Amoia leaves behind his boxer dog, Roscoe, and hundreds of people who loved him. That love was evident Saturday when friends and family held a vigil for him. “We were fortunate enough to be those friends that turned into family,” Brittany Jones said.

Now, his loved ones need answers, and say Amoia will be deeply missed in the community.

Police said Tuesday they had a person of interest but provided no suspect information.

Police say they plan to share another press release once they get more information from their investigation.
