JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Boxes of dead pelicans are stacked outside of the B.E.A.K.S. Bird Hospital.
“We're in some kind of horrible incident. Somebody is killing the birds -- somebody is whacking their wings off and it's intentional,” said Cindy Mosling, the director of Bird Emergency Aid and Kare Sanctuary.
Mosling told Action News that a total of 18 pelicans have been found with shattered wings and so far eight of them have died.
“They're all young they all have like a major blow to a wing,” Mosling said. “It's such a major break and they're all in the same location with a heavy, heavy handed hit.”
These injured and dead birds are being found from Atlantic Beach down the coast to St Augustine.
“This is not acceptable, the pain and suffering you cause the animals for whatever reason. They didn't do anything -- they didn't deserve it," Mosling said.
These birds are protected by the Migratory Bird Treaty Act.
But Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission vows to get to the bottom of this. Mosling just hopes its soon.
“There's a high price to pay,” Mosling said. “I want them to find the person or persons who did this and stop them and set an example of what happens when you do things like this.”
If you know any information about who's harming these birds you're asked to contact FWC.
