Ethel Valentine said she feared for her son’s life when Saturday’s gunshots woke her up.

“My son lives with me, so I went screaming for him,” she said. “We came outside and the police were coming down the street.”

Officers found the 23-year-old’s body next to a concrete flower bed.

His grandfather, a disabled veteran, told Action News Jax that his grandson helped care for him. He said he comes from a big family that is now trying to understand why his life was taken.

It’s the second deadly shooting on Gullege Drive in just over a month.

On Sept. 8, 18-year-old Tavarius Jenkins was shot and killed inside a home.

“You can bring them up right and they still steer the other way,” Valentine said.

A Crime Stoppers sign sits at the corner of Gullege Drive encouraging anyone with information about the shooting to come forward.
