A 5-year-old girl who was accidentally shot and killed by her brother in Jacksonville was laid to rest on Saturday.

Police said Serenity Allen, her 8-year-old brother and a 4-year-old neighbor were home alone at a Roosevelt Gardens apartment on Feb. 4 when the 8-year-old found a gun.

Police said the 8-year-old accidentally shot his sister and their neighbor, then ran to a neighbor for help.

Serenity was killed and the 4-year-old boy had injuries not considered life-threatening, police said.

Officers said Serenity's mom may have left the children alone and gone to the store.

Their mother's boyfriend, Maurice Antonio Mobley, was arrested and charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon in connection with the shooting.

Action News Jax found that Mobley has an extensive criminal history. He was charged in 2001 with lewd or lascivious act on a child. A few years later, he was arrested for felony battery, and then again for not registering on the sex offender list.

Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said it would meet with the state attorney's office, the Florida Department of Children and Families, the child protection team and the medical examiner's office to determine if there will be any additional charges or sanctions.

Mobley’s next court appearance is scheduled for Feb. 28.
