71-year-old grandmother injured in second shooting at same home in eight months

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A 71-year-old grandmother is recovering after being shot outside her Northside home Tuesday, but this is not the first shooting to occur at the residence.

We reported on a shooting Oct. 23 last year that took the life of a 72-year-old man who was shot twice in the chest on the 2000 block of West 14th Street.

The latest victim was shot while standing near her car outside the same home.

“Clearly something’s going on there,” said Dale Carson, law and safety expert for Action News Jax.

Carson said two shootings at the same residence in such a short time suggest these incidents likely were targeted assassination attempts.

“The fact that it’s the same home tells you that somebody is angry with somebody at that house, and the first shooting was apparently not effective enough of a demonstration of that hostility that it required a second dose,” Carson said.

We asked JSO if it could confirm the two shootings were linked or if the agency suspects the shootings were targeted.

We did not hear back.

Cason said that is no surprise.

“That tends to indicate they’re playing it close to their vest because they already know what’s going on and they probably have suspicions as to who’s involved and those sorts of things,” he said. “So, there’s no need to broadcast that information for fear it might send those people into hiding.”

Police said the woman who was shot was transported to a hospital and discharged about an hour later with non-life-threatening injuries.

Police don’t have a description of the suspects or their getaway vehicle.

They are asking the community to come forward with any information they may have by contacting JSO’s non-emergency number 904-630-0500 or anonymously by calling 1-866-845-TIPS.
