Action News Investigates: DCF questioned about Columbia County family

Florida Department of Children and Families (DCF)

COLUMBIA COUNTY, Fla. — The killing of a 16-year-old Columbia County boy, allegedly at the hands of his younger sisters, has Action News taking a look at the police reports detailing what life may have been like for the children.

Police said 15-year-old Misty "Ariel" Kornegay shot and killed her brother Damien Kornegay with the help of their 11-year-old sister, Nicole, on Monday.

Action News took a look at police reports. In 2010, Kevin Kornegay reportedly sexually abused a family member and the victim, a little girl, did not immediately receive counseling.

Seven months later, there was a call to the abuse hotline from the Kornegay family.  This, according to investigators, involved an incident between Ariel and her brother. In a heavily redacted report, the mother, Misty Kornegay, is said to have found two people having sex.  Despite the details of that report, there was no open DCF investigation.

A deputy said earlier this week, Ariel was locked in a room for up to 20 days at a time with nothing more than a blanket and bucket to urinate in.

Action News asked DCF if it failed this family, and if that failure could have contributed to the deadly events of this week.

DCF said, "If it is determined that the death of the older brother is a result of abuse or neglect by a caregiver, all records pertaining to the investigation will become public record. In the meantime, the investigation remains open and active."
