Action News Jax viewer in Brussels says act of terror will strengthen Belgium

An Action News Jax viewer in Brussels reached out to our Romney Smith Tuesday morning. She spoke with him all morning long as the terror plot continued to unfold and has more on how he hopes the country will recover.

The attacks happened during the heaviest time for commuters in the capital of Belgium.

Two explosions rocked the airport, and a third rocked a metro station, leaving Action News Jax viewer Cem Akkiz and his co-workers stunned.

“We hear all morning, ambulances, firemen and experiencing helicopter around the city,” Akkiz said.

Through tweets, Akkiz updated Romney Smith on how police warned people to stay inside and how the phone systems were blocked. Many in Belgium were stunned something so violent could happen in a place so peaceful.

“For us, terrorists are in Africa, Asia, America, Latin America. For us, it was something very strange because we’ve never been confronted with terrorist attacks before,” Akkiz said.

While many search for loved ones, Akkiz wants other Action News Jax viewers to know this act of terror will strengthen his country.

“We have to still go on with our lives, take the metro subway and if we are afraid the terrorists will win,” Akkiz said.

Akkiz told us Wednesday that he and his family are fine and he looks forward to observing a minute of silence at noon, which will be observed nationwide.
