Medical Examiner: Teen football player died of heat stroke at Camp Blanding

William Shogran Jr., 14, collapsed during practice at Camp Blanding.

ORANGE PARK, Fla. — The autopsy report lists the probable cause of death as heat stroke for a 14-year-old boy who collapsed at football practice at Camp Blanding this summer.

The Alachua County medical examiner ruled the death of William Shogran Jr. as an accident.

Shogran played for the Sebastian River High School football team.

The team rented Camp Blanding for a 4-day football camp in August.

On Aug. 13, according to the Clay County Sheriff's Office report released Monday, Shogran told his coach he felt dizzy as he walked toward the water on the sideline.  Shogran then told his coaches he felt like he was going to pass out.  His coaches gave him water and bags of ice to try to get him to cool off.  Shogran became unresponsive when rescue crews arrived.  He was rushed to a hospital in Starke where he died.

The medical examiner found no evidence of chemical intoxication.

Investigators said it was 79 degrees outside at the time of the incident.  When Shogran arrived at the hospital in Starke, he had a body temperature fo 107 degrees.

His coaches also told deputies he had never played football before.
