COLUMBIA COUNTY, Fla. — The Columbia County Sheriff’s Office is waiting for the results of an autopsy performed Monday on remains found in Lake City last week.
Police say the clothes found on that body appear to match the description of what 56-year-old Sharon Jackson was wearing when she was last seen on June 22. Still, police say they need confirmation before moving forward in their investigation.
For now, police are considering the remains as part of a homicide investigation, and asking the public for information.
"This was a well-traveled road, said Murray Smith, public information officer with the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office.
Smith says they have received hundreds of calls from people trying to help solve the case.

On Friday, cadaver dogs led searchers to a body in a heavily wooded area just 400 yards from the spot where Jackson's car was left abandoned for days in the median of State Road 47.
So far, those tips have come up empty.
The last known person to see Jackson was an FHP officer who stopped to help her on the morning of June 22. She told the officer she ran out of gas and help was on the way.
According to the FHP policy manual, Action News found the officer was only required to stay if Jackson appeared to be unsafe. FHP would not comment on the details of their conversation, but a spokesperson told me they believe the officer followed protocol.
On Monday, an autopsy was performed on those remains in Duval County. Until the results are released, police are considering this a homicide and still looking for information.
"At this time we have no indication that there's foul play. We're just trying to get some facts and answers for her family."
