This plan is a portion of the 202 Capital Improvement Project in St. Augustine. The developers said it will improve the quality of roads, build safety features for bicyclists and pedestrians, and “create an engaging atmosphere” for residents and visitors.
The focus will be around Castillo de San Marcos, Avenida Menendez and Cuna Street.
A statement from the developers said in part, “We’re excited about the potential of Cuna Street. This will continue the legacy of Aviles Street and the transformation of Hypolita and Spanish Streets. The street will better support pedestrian and bicycle users, while being a wonderful, European-style café area.”
“I think it’s good as long as it doesn’t push the local business out,” visitor Nick Brocato said. “I think that’s the best part about St. Augustine is just all of the little shops, family-owned businesses.”
The developers told Action News Jax one building will be remodeled, but other business will not need to shut down their stores.
If approved by the Historical Architectural Review Board, construction will begin in early 2020 and continue for about eight months.
