Better Business Bureau warns against Jacksonville lawn and tree company

BBB warns of Jacksonville business scam — The Better Business Bureau is warning people about a local tree removal company in Jacksonville.

Action News Jax uncovered several complaints against Hilton Long Lawn and Tree Company in over two months.

“I feel ripped off,” said Jean Broxton.

Ripped off and now out of thousands of dollars, says 81-year old Jean Broxton: “I’m very ashamed of myself, for what I did."

Broxton said three weeks ago, she paid Hilton Long Lawn and Tree Company to remove two trees from her yard that were damaged from some storms weeks before.

“He asked, can I give him some money, as a down payment, to pay his men. So I went to my bank and took out $200,” said Broxton.

She showed Action News Jax the work order, where she paid $2,500 on top of the deposit, only to have her trees still in the yard and debris everywhere.

Action News Jax found three similar complaints against the same company on the Better Business Bureau website.

One happened in June 2017, one in May 2017 and another in June of  2016. The company has an "F" grade with the BBB and has a non-credited status.

We stopped by the address listed for the company only to see a private property sign on the fence and a dog in the driveway, but there wasn’t a sign advertising the business.

We called the company, but no one picked up. Minutes later, someone from the business called Action News Jax disputing the complaints on BBB’s website.

When we asked for an interview, he hung up on our reporter.

The BBB advises homeowners to pay extra attention and do their homework when choosing a company to do work at your home or business.
