BRUNSWICK, Ga. — Searchers have recovered the body of a Brunswick man who drowned after jumping into a river to rescue a dog.
A gofundme page created for Michael Shreve says he was married and had nine children.
He was pulled ashore Saturday, three days after his heroic effort cost him his life.
According to a witness, Shreve was eating lunch at the Altamaha Park Wednesday when he was alerted about a dog floating down the river.
He reportedly set aside his wallet, took off his shoes and shirt and dove in to save the animal.
Shreve was able to reach the dog and both were headed back to the dock when they went underwater and never resurfaced.
Rescuers searched the muddy waters using sonar equipment and located him Saturday morning about a half mile downstream from where he was last seen.
