A Camden County Sheriff’s office jail employee and another man face battery charges after a drunken fight Saturday during which a gun fired.
Neither man was struck, and police have not determined who fired the gun, but police charged county jail employee Duncan Nicholas Walker, 23, with battery and reckless conduct.
Police also charged William Hunter Sprinkle, who they said fought with Walker near a pickup while both men were “highly intoxicated.”
One account by Walker said Sprinkle gained control of a 9 mm pistol after wrestling it away from Walker during an altercation and walked him at gunpoint in a home Walker shares with his parents, police said.
Sprinkle told police he reached for the gun because he thought Walker was threatening suicide but that Walker pointed the gun at him.
The man said Walker made him lie on the ground, said police in a report that said Sprinkle’s version was consistent with Sprinkle’s wet dirty clothes.
At one point, Walker said Sprinkle also retrieved a .357 Magnum revolver from the truck and that he armed himself inside the house he shares with his parents with an assault-style weapon.
Police said they retrieved the .357 from a bedroom occupied by Walker’s parents at the time.
“The Camden County Sheriff’s Office takes allegations of misconduct seriously, regardless of an individual’s position or employment status,” Sheriff Kevin Chaney said Sunday. The sheriff said Walker had been “relieved of his duties.”
“Let me be absolutely clear: wearing our uniform or carrying our badge does not place anyone above the law. In fact, I expect more from the men and women who have been entrusted to serve and protect this community,” Chaney said.
