City Rescue Mission to provide expanded overnight services for record cold weekend

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — With temperatures hitting dangerous lows this weekend, the City Rescue Mission vows not to turn anyone away.

“This weekend we want to open up and we call it ‘cold night shelter,’ where we can help at least 100 people,” City Rescue Mission Executive Director Paul Stasi said.

Stasi said the shelter will open its doors at 2:30 p.m. for those looking to stay Saturday night and again Sunday.

People will receive a hot meal, access to showers and clean clothing.

“Tonight it’s going to be risky because it’s predicted to go below freezing and then on top of that you have the wind chill,” Stasi said.

Before the thermostat drops below freezing, several local ministries have set up shop outside the rescue mission to hand out brand-new coats and sweatshirts.

“What’s awesome is the Jaguars donated all the gear you see, brand-new items. It was donated so we can help and bless those individuals in our community,” Three Grains of Rice Missions President and CEO Ed Perez said.

Folks could also come and get breakfast, some snacks and water to take back to where they’re staying.

Volunteers said it’s important to step up and show others less fortunate that they matter.

“It’s about providing them something they’re going to feel good about because it translates to them that we value them, that we care,” Perez said.

The City Rescue Mission will also be following COVID-19 protocols. Folks who come into the shelter this weekend will have to take a provided COVID-19 test. If they test positive, the mission will provide a separate place for them to quarantine.
