Clay County is on track to be fast growing county in Florida

Clay County is on track to be the fastest growing county in the state.

Thursday, county leaders gathered for the State of the County.

Amy Pope Wells, chairwoman of the Chamber of Commerce said the First Coast Expressway is driving the growth, and that more than 10,000 new homes are expected in Clay.

Local families told Action News Jax they noticed the area’s expansion.

Carol Hambright said, “You go past and it’s, like, didn’t see that last week, there’s a new development coming in.”

At the start of January, Action News Jax confirmed AT&T is relocating 150 out-of-state positions to their Orange Park call center.

Pope Wells explained the county is struggling to keep up with the growth, especially when it comes to infrastructure.

“It will affect the day-to-day citizens as we go through this process," she said.

Neighbors said they hope the boom will mean more businesses.

“If they’re going to develop a lot more houses out here and more people are moving out this way, they need to develop more shopping centers, “ Catherine Dyson said.
