Clay County preparing for potential flooding

CLAY COUNTY, Fla. — The remnants of Tropical Storm Erika still pose a threat to Florida in the form of flooding.

The Clay County Emergency Management Agency is preparing for possible flooding if and when a storm hits our area.

Emergency Operations Center Director John Ward said the EOC is watching the remnants of Erika and the possible flooding they pose.

“With the next three days, we’re looking at getting significant rainfall,” Ward said.

Clay County crews have been watching the storm for the past week.

Ward said an area of concern is Black Creek. He said that's due to the unusual amount of rain over the last couple of weeks.

“On top of that tropical system, as it comes through dropping heavier rainfall, we’re concerned we’ll get some decent flooding out of this,” Ward said.

He said Black Creek Basin is already saturated and close to flooding.

His team will be making phone calls to people across Clay County over the weekend to inform the community how to prepare for potential flooding.

Over the past week Sanchez has been watching what is now the remnants of Erika make its way toward Florida.

“Yesterday I went and stocked up on supplies and everything else,” Sanchez said. “We usually keep a good bit of supplies on hand just in case there is something that happens.”

Josue Sanchez believes preparation is the key when it comes to riding out the storms.
