Tropical Storm Ian: Closed locations and canceled events as storm nears Northeast Florida

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Hurricane Ian made landfall on the West Coast of Florida on Tuesday, Sept. 28. As it continues its trek up the state towards North Florida here is a growing list of locations and events that have closed or rescheduled throughout the area.

Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens — Due to weather indications, the zoo will be closing beginning on Wednesday, 9/28 at 3 p.m. through Friday, 9/30. The zoo has activated the initial phases of the hurricane response plan for the care and safety of our animals. All animals have been relocated indoors and are doing well.

Banks and Financial Institutions

VyStar — The following VyStar branches are temporarily closed due to Hurricane Ian. VyStar will post all closure notices, adjusted hours of operation and ATM availability on this page and their Locations page.

Closed Thursday, Sept. 29:

All VyStar branches will be closed Thursday, Sept. 29. Branches will reopen when it is safe to do so based on the path and severity of Hurricane Ian.

Hurricane Ian: Northeast Florida evacuation information

Closed Wednesday, Sept. 28:

  • Steinhatchee, Titusville, Melbourne, Villages Wildwood, Villages Oxford, Mount Dora, Ocala, Downtown Orlando, Oviedo, Winter Garden, Sanford, St. Augustine North, St. Augustine Beach, Ponte Vedra.

Closed at noon Wednesday, Sept. 28:

  • Tallahassee, Perry, Lake City, Alachua, Gainesville, Gainesville Oaks, Gainesville 43rd Street, Palatka, Starke, Daytona Beach, DeLand, Flagler, Orange City, Palm Coast, Port Orange.

Closed at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 28:

  • St. Augustine (SR 312), Fernandina Beach, Jacksonville Beach, Neptune Beach, NAS Jacksonville.

Contact Center Hours:

Contact Center will be open Thursday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and can be reached by calling 904-777-6000 or 800-445-6289. You can also speak with a VyStar representative during those hours via VyChat.

Jax Federal Credit Union announced that it will be closing all of its branches and member engagement center early at 1:00 p.m. on Sept. 28, 2022 and will be closed all day on Thursday, Sept. 29, 2022 and Friday, Sept. 30, 2022 in anticipation of Hurricane Ian as it makes its path across Florida. The credit union is expected to reopen on Saturday, Oct. 1, 2022 for normal business hours.

Hospitals and health care

Baptist Health

All Baptist emergency centers are open and operating as normal.

Baptist MD Anderson Cancer Center and Baptist HealthPlace at Nocatee will be closed on Thursday, Sept. 29 and Friday, Sept. 30. MD Anderson is planning to return to normal operations on Saturday, Oct. 1 and the HealthPlace will look to resume operations on Monday, Oct. 3.

Hurricane Ian: Northeast Florida, Southeast Georgia school closure information

  • Physician offices will be closed on Thursday, Sept. 29 and Friday, Sept. 30. See details below.
  • Surgeries, procedures, diagnostic studies and imaging will be available at locations WITHIN our hospitals and freestanding emergency centers on Friday, Sept. 30. Those scheduled for procedures in non-hospital locations will be rescheduled.
  • If you had an appointment scheduled for this time, your physician’s office will contact you to reschedule.
  • Virtual doctor’s visits are available 24/7 on HealthPlace on Demand.
  • Starting Thursday, Sept. 29 at 6 am: Visitation will change for all hospitals to 1 designated visitor per adult patient who can stay for the duration of the hurricane (2 visitors for Labor & Delivery or Wolfson Children’s patients).

Mayo Clinic

Mayo Clinic is closely monitoring the projected impact but for now, the clinic and hospital in Jacksonville will remain open. However, operational changes for Thursday, Sept. 29 and Friday, Sept. 30 are as follows:

  • Only surgeries and outpatient procedures considered urgent or emergent will be conducted. All others will be rescheduled. Patients are being notified.
  • The COVID-19 drive thru facility will be closed Thursday and Friday but resume normal operations on Saturday, Oct.1.
  • The vaccine clinic will be closed Thursday and Friday but will resume normal operations on Monday, Oct. 3.
  • The St. Augustine Primary Care location will be closed Thursday and Friday.

Ascension St. Vincent’s medical group plans to keep all hospitals open at this time. Doctor offices, primary care, urgent care and specialty care clinics will be closed Thursday, Sept. 29 and Friday, Sept. 30.

HCA Florida Memorial Hospital and Orange Park will remain open. Four of their Emergency campuses throughout Duval also plan to remain open. HCA’s Julington Creek emergency campus also plans on staying open. Click here for more information.

Flagler Health+

St. Augustine-based Flagler Hospital will limit hospital access, beginning at 8 p.m. today, September 28, receiving only patients seeking emergency care or labor and delivery services via the emergency care center entrance.

Hurricane Ian: Northeast Florida shelter information

All visitors will have to leave the hospital no later than 8 p.m. for their own safety. A dedicated team will be proactively calling the families of admitted patients twice per day throughout the storm to provide updates on their loved one.

Please do not attempt to seek shelter at the hospital. For county emergency and shelter information, please refer to the resources available from the St. Johns County Department of Emergency Management.

Additionally, outpatient surgeries and elective procedures on Thursday and Friday will be rescheduled. All Flagler Health+ Ambulatory Enterprise locations and satellite offices will be closed on Thursday and Friday, reopening on Monday, Oct. 3. If you had a surgery, procedure, or appointment scheduled during that timeframe, you will be contacted to reschedule. Nemours Children’s Health Jacksonville

All Jacksonville locations are closed on Thursday, Sept. 29. The decision of whether to open or close our locations on Friday, Sept. 30, will be announced as soon as possible.

This includes Nemours Children’s Health, Nocatee in St. Johns County and Nemours Children’s Health, Fleming Island in Clay County.

Transportation

The Jacksonville Transportation Authority’s (JTA) top priority remains the safety and wellbeing of all customers and employees as we prepare for potential local impacts of Hurricane Ian. As of this release, the following service updates are in effect:

*Status of Service

  • JTA Bus Routes – OPEN until 8 p.m.
  • St. Johns River Ferry - CLOSED
  • ReadiRide – OPEN until 8 p.m.
  • Express Select – OPEN until 8 p.m.
  • Skyway – OPEN until 8 p.m.
  • Paratransit – OPEN until 3 p.m.
  • Administrative Offices – Closed at Noon.

St. Johns River Ferry

  • Service for the St. Johns River Ferry is suspended. The vessel left Mayport this morning for a secure location.
  • We anticipate returning to regular operation by Saturday, Oct. 1, weather permitting.

JTA Bus Routes / First Coast Flyer / ReadiRide / Express Select

  • JTA Bus Routes, ReadiRide, the First Coast Flyer, and Express Select Services are operating on a regular schedule as long as weather permits until 8 p.m. Wednesday.
  • Service will be suspended after 8 p.m. Wednesday, with closures continuing through Thursday.
  • We anticipate service returning by mid-day Friday, following a Sunday schedule if weather permits.
  • JTA will suspend all transportation services if and when sustained winds reach 35 miles per hour, and will stop crossing major bridges in accordance with the instructions of law enforcement officials.
  • Additional detours and service disruptions may occur in the coming days due to flooding and other dangerous road conditions.

Skyway

  • Skyway service will close at 8 p.m. Wednesday, and reopen Monday, Oct. 3.
  • Service may be suspended earlier based on weather conditions.

Connexion & Connexion Plus paratransit

  • Paratransit services continue to operate on regular schedules until 3 p.m. Wednesday.
  • Return and life sustaining trips will take place after 3 p.m., as long as it is safe to do so.
  • We anticipate service returning by mid-day Friday, following a Sunday schedule if weather permits.
  • Those with special medical needs must register with the City of Jacksonville if evacuations are ordered, and you are in need of transportation to a shelter. Please call (904) 255-3172 for more info. Registration does NOT carry over year-to-year.

JTA Administrative Offices

JTA Administrative offices will close Wednesday at noon, reopening Monday, Oct. 3.

JTA Customer Service

Events & Concerts

BrickUniverse Lego fan festival postponed until Apr. 1 — Apr. 2, 2023.

Jacksonville Humane Society moves toast to the animals event to November in light of Hurricane Ian. In light of the state of emergency declared for the city of Jacksonville, the Jacksonville Humane Society (JHS) made the difficult decision to move their scheduled event, the 24th annual Toast to the Animals, which was scheduled for the evening of September 28th, 2022, to November 9th, 2022.

Hurricane Ian: Essential information for St. Augustine, St. Johns County

Toast to the Animals is an annual fundraiser for the JHS Medical Fund, which raises more than $200,000 for the veterinary care of thousands of dogs and cats in Jacksonville. JHS will honor all tickets that were purchased for the original date and tickets for the rescheduled November date are now available for purchase.

The Pride Parade scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 1 has been postponed until further notice. At this time, the pride kick-off party, comedy for pride with Jessica Kirson and the Sunday pride festival.

The Soul Food and Music Festival has been rescheduled for Nov. 5, 2022 from 12 p.m. – 7 p.m. at the Vera Francis Hall Park in Green Cove Springs. This is because of the anticipated impacts of Hurricane Ian.

The Arlington Council’s Signature event has been rescheduled to Saturday, Oct. 8. The JAX Chamber Arlington Council was set to host the silent film festival featuring three silent movie shorts displaying outdoors at Arlington’s historic silent film museum, Norman Studios.

Maxwell: The Night Tour has been rescheduled to Oct. 2, 2022 at VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena.

Food for Clay County, a food distribution event, has been rescheduled to Sept. 28 at 10 p.m. at the Challenge Enterprises warehouse located at 3530 Enterprises Way in Green Cove Springs.

Jerry Seinfeld live at the Moran Theatre has been reschedule to Apr. 20, 2023. All tickets will be honored for the newly rescheduled date. Refunds available at point of purchase, and may be requested up to 30 days from rescheduled announcement.

Stores & Super Markets

IKEA closing at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 28 due to Hurricane Ian. IKEA Jacksonville will be closing all store operations, including customer home delivery and online purchase pickup. Store operations are anticipated to resume on Saturday, Oct. 1 at 12 p.m.

Hurricane Ian: Essential information for Green Cove Springs, Clay County

Many of the Duval County Publix locations are planning to close Wednesday, Sept. 28 at 7 p.m. until Sept. 30 at 7 a.m. To find a full list of Publix locations and planned closing and opening times click here.
