ORANGE PARK, Fla. — An Orange Park crossing guard was taken to the hospital with serious injuries Tuesday morning after being hit by a vehicle at the intersection of Gano Avenue and Miller Street.
According to the Orange Park Police Department, the crossing guard was actively stopping traffic on Miller Street when a vehicle turning southbound onto Miller Street from Gano Avenue hit her.

Police said she was wearing a high-visibility traffic vest and holding a stop sign at the time of the crash.
The driver involved in the collision stopped immediately at the scene and is cooperating with law enforcement officers, according to police.

Orange Park Police Chief Cody Monroe praised the dedication of crossing guards working throughout the community.
“Our crossing guards put their own safety on the line each day to help ensure our children make it safely across our roadways,” Monroe said in a news release. “They are dedicated members of our community and we are incredibly grateful for the work they do.”

Monroe called on motorists to take extra precautions while driving near school zones and crosswalks.
“With school back in session, we cannot emphasize this enough: Please slow down, stay alert and use extra caution when driving near schools, crosswalks and crossing guards,” Monroe said. “A few extra seconds of patience can make all the difference.”
Orange Park Police said the crash remains under investigation.
