Crown Point Elementary set to reopen Friday after smoke, broken HVAC cancels classes

‘Independent external vendor’ deems school safe for students after smoke filled a handful of classrooms in the early-morning hours on Thursday

Smoke closes Crown Point Elementary; School to reopen on Friday

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The principal of Crown Point Elementary School in Mandarin said the school will reopen Friday after closing a day earlier when smoke from a malfunctioning HVAC unit filled classrooms.

“Crown Point Elementary has been thoroughly inspected by our district maintenance teams and an independent external vendor,” said principal Katie O’Connell. “The building has been determined to be safe.”

Crews from Jacksonville Fire Rescue Department responded to the school about 7:14 a.m. Thursday for reported smoke. School officials said only about 20 students were present at the time.

Other families were notified prior to coming to campus, and the school was closed

The smoke, which affected four classrooms, was blamed on a malfunctioning air-handler. It has since been repaired, school officials said.
