Child among 2 dead after fire breaks out at Stonemont Village Apartments, authorities say

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office, Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department and the State Fire Marshal are investigating a fire at Stonemont Village Apartments after a woman and child died and a man was critically injured.

According to JFRD, JSO and rescue personnel from JFRD responded around 10:11 p.m., and upon arrival, they located one bottom-floor apartment on fire. Three victims were rescued from inside and transported to local hospitals.

A 3-year-old girl and a 60-62 year-old woman were pronounced dead at the hospital. A 26-28-year-old man is in critical condition.

JFRD confirmed that the fire was contained to one apartment, but the apartment above will likely be displaced due to smoke or residual damage. No other apartments suffered any damage. However, the apartment where the fire started was deemed a complete loss.

The State Fire Marshal is currently investigating the initial cause of the fire. It is unclear whether foul play was involved at this time.
