Coronavirus: Christmas tree sales up from last year, started earlier due to pandemic

MIDDLEBURG, Fla. —

Songer’s Christmas Tree Farm in Middleburg wrapped up their final day of the season Sunday.

Demand was up, and Owner Michael Songer said calls came in earlier this year than he’s ever seen in 35 years of business.

Songer said he saw interest as early as Nov. 1, which he believes is because of the pandemic.

“People are just anxious to get out of the house,” he said; and likely looking for something to smile about.

Christina Ribera and her boyfriend were searching for their tree.

“We liked walking around and getting out of the house. We brought the dogs, so that was good.” Unfortunately, they left with nothing — most of the farm has already been picked over.

Songer said they, like other tree farms across the state, are experiencing a shortage.

He explained over the past three years, business has increased, leading to a lack of trees. He said they don’t cut down trees under five feet.

Along with that, there’s fewer tree farms than there once were.

“A lot of us are getting to the twilight of our career and we’re not as physical as we used to be,” Songer told Action News Jax’s Robert Grant.

The Florida Christmas Tree Association lists all of the farms across the state.

Songer recommended those who still haven’t found one will likely have to go to a lot.
