Demolition of Jacksonville Landing forces families to find new spot to watch fireworks

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The demolition of the Jacksonville Landing is forcing families downtown to find a new spot to ring in the new year.

Northeast Florida native Furman Jackson told Action News Jax it was his favorite spot to celebrate the holidays.

“It’s not the same. It’s just not the same,” he said, “I don’t even know where I’m going to go watch the fireworks, now.”

The downtown display went off over the St. Johns River.

Demolition work forced families to throw away tradition and find a new spot to see the show.

Jackson described, “You could probably go over to the other side, but it’s just being able to sit here, watch it, and enjoy with family and friends. It’s just sad to see it go, honestly.”

Earlier in December, city leaders told Action News Jax they recommended families watch from the Northbank and Southbank, Friendship Fountain, or under the Fuller Warren Bridge.

Jackson said he hopes the area will be cleaned up and ready for watching the fireworks by New Year’s Eve 2020.

“It would be nice if, by the beginning of next year, something will be there that the family can come to and enjoy themselves,” Jackson said.

City leaders said the river walk area in front of the Jacksonville Landing demolition site would be open for the firework display.
