Police: Missing 11-year-old Jacksonville boy found safe after nearly 24 hours

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — 5 p.m. Update: Nohlan Surrency is home safe and sound on Tuesday. He was found nearly 24 hours after his family reported him missing Monday afternoon.

The family called this a victory, but they said they’re well aware it could have ended tragically.

JSO said they found him hiding nearby in a vacant house.

Around 1:15 p.m., Action News Jax observed a JSO officer walking Nohlan from the command center to a patrol car to take him home.

Dozens of JSO and JFRD crews spent day and night searching for the boy after he was reported missing.

JSO said he was last seen off Moncrief Road near West 33rd Street.

His aunt and uncle, Larry and Tonya Brooks, said they’re grateful the outcome is what it is.

“We thank God it was put out quickly and it was a quick response. Usually time is of the essence so we just thank God they did a wonderful job,” Larry Brooks said.

When the two heard the news, they rushed to be by the family’s side, especially Nohlan’s mother.

“She was a little upset, a little nervous, but she’s doing a lot better now,” Larry said.

Larry also said not all missing kid reports come out victorious.

He said it’s important to always know where your kids are.

“We have to be a little more attentive to them and keep a closer eye on them because sometimes they just wander off and we think they’re out there playing,” Larry said.

It was a scary night for the family but this afternoon they’re relieved to have Nohlan back.

“We just thank god that it’s a victory. Sometimes the enemy just wants to take the kids and cause things to happen,” Larry said.

12:55 p.m. Update: The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office announced Tuesday afternoon that Nohlan Surrency has been found safe.

“The child was found hiding in a vacant residence within the area in which we believed he was going to be,” a JSO spokesperson said in a statement to Action News Jax.
