JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Local Duval County parents tell Action News Jax their children’s Duval Homeroom schedules, which were released last week, are incorrect.
Parents we interviewed say their students’ Duval Homeroom schedules don’t include classes they requested, classes their students need to graduate, or classes students would like to take to achieve college credit, such as Advanced Placement (AP) courses.
Duval County Public Schools (DCPS), tells Action News Jax many schedules have been finalized and went on to say schedules tend to be fluid at the beginning of every school year.
ACTION NEWS JAX: BACK TO CLASS
A DCPS spokesperson says scheduling adjustments will continue to occur through the first days of school as enrollment numbers and parent/student options are finalized.”
Yes, schools always work with parents to meet their students’ needs and requests. This is not different than any other year,” said DCPS spokesperson, Laureen Ricks. “Note that because all specialized programs and electives cannot be delivered both in-school and through distance learning, elective choices for high school students may be limited in the Duval HomeRoom option. For example, courses that historically have a lower demand may not be able to be offered through Duval Homeroom. This is dependent upon each school’s situation and the numbers of students requesting specific courses through brick-and-mortar and Duval Homeroom. When schools cannot offer a specific course options are made available through our virtual school, Duval Virtual Instructional Academy. Students can take individual courses with DVIA and remain enrolled in their current school of attendance. We refer to this as Duval Flex. Duval Flex courses are not Duval Homeroom courses. They are a true virtual course which is self-paced, but it does provide additional options for students if needed.”
Ricks says school counselors should be able to address parents’ concerns.
”...Scheduling is based on the number of students requesting specific courses. For example, if there are 30 students requesting AP Calculus and 20 of them are choosing Duval Homeroom, a section of Duval Homeroom AP Calculus would be created and 10 brick and mortar students would have to select another course, or choose Duval Flex for AP calculus since there are not enough students selecting this course to make 2 full classes,” said Ricks.
