Local teacher frustrated when his class was not quarantined after he tested positive for COVID-19

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — “I said I was concerned about my paraprofessionals and my kids and they still did nothing,” claims Chris Guerrieri.

Guerrieri is a Duval County teacher at Palm Avenue Exceptional Student Center.  He says on Tuesday he tested positive for the virus and immediately notified the school.

”On Wednesday the Department of Health called me and they asked me two questions. They said who are your Paraprofessionals? And when did you start feeling symptoms, which was on Monday and so I thought things would be fine.”

But Guerrieri says, from what he knows, no one he told the health department about for contact tracing has been asked to quarantine.  

“It’s outrageous and one of my paraprofessionals takes care of her elderly mom and her husband. I mean, she can’t afford to take anything like that home.”

And Guerrieri claims he’s not the only one who has concerns about how the department of health and the district are handling positive cases.  We reached out to DCPS Friday night.

A spokesperson told Action News Jax they follow state policy and the Florida Department of Health – Duval leads contact tracing efforts.

Guerrieri says he’s is hoping the department of health will do more to keep people safe.  

“Their contact tracing is woefully inadequate. We’ve got to prioritize safety if we want to end the pandemic and if we want to protect people.”
