JSO said she was shot around 11:30 p.m. in the area of Otter Lake Court near Atlantic Boulevard. Police told Action News Jax the mother knew the person who shot her.

The incident between the woman and the man she’s been in a relationship with and shares a child with, started after an argument earlier at 9 p.m.

The Sheriff’s Office said during the argument, the man stole the mother’s cell phone. Police said she then went to a friend’s house in the 4800 block of Silver Street.

The man told them he would return the phone by placing it in the friend’s mailbox, police said. When the friend came to the mailbox to get the phone, JSO said the man shot at the friend, but she was not hit.

Police said he then ran down the road and shot into the house.

At 11:10 p.m., the mother left the home and was in the 12800 block of Otter Lake Court near Atlantic Boulevard, an area known to the mother.

JSO said 20 minutes later, the man, who was also in the area, jumped out of nearby bushes and shot into her car, hitting her in the chest. She was taken to the hospital and is expected to be OK.

Detectives are investigating the incident. Police did not say if they have made an arrest.
