JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Qualified students in Duval County are now allowed to take medical marijuana on school grounds but there are specific rules that must be followed.
Duval County Public Schools said a student, who has been added to the Medical Marijuana Use Registry by a physician to receive marijuana for medical use, must follow these rules:
- Only one parent or caregiver (who is 21 or older) can administer the medical marijuana to a qualified student, unless the student is a minor or has a disability that prevents them from being able to care for themselves. School nurses, health care personnel or the school staff cannot administer, hold, store or move it.
- It must be taken at at a specific location in the school designated by the school administration and the School Health Services Department. This is to make sure it doesn’t;'t disrupt the educational environment or be exposed to other students.
- A qualified student cannot take medical marijuana while on a school bus or during a school-sponsored event.
- Everyone involved must have proof of authorization.

According to the school board guidelines, the medical marijuana policy can be canceled at any time if the federal government sees the district’s federal funds are jeopardized by the policy.
Clay County is the only other local school district at this time to also allow students to take medical marijuana on campus.
