Seniors stuck because of broken elevator at Jacksonville 55+ apartment community

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Some residents at a Jacksonville 55+ living community say they are trapped on the higher floors of their apartment building.

They said an elevator has been out of service for six days and don’t think it will get fixed any time soon.

Those who are in their 80′s like Maureen Dwyer and Sandy Shartran, say not everyone can use the stairs to leave.

“In this group there are 20 people, 7 of which can’t go down the stairs alone,” Dwyer said.

They describe the situation at Meetinghouse at Collins Cove as being trapped on the second and third floors.

“We are now into day six, going on day secen of no elevator, I see this as a life-or-death threat to the people on this floor,” Dwyer said.

“I cancelled a doctor’s appointment yesterday, three months trying to get an appointment so here I am again,” Shartran said.

The two told Action News Jax that a clean-up job led to the electrical board getting burned.

“What would happen if you had a fire here?,” Shartran said.

Action News Jax walked into the leasing office and were told from an employee that they’ve ordered the parts for the elevator to be fixed, saying they’re waiting on the contractors and as soon as they get here, it will get fixed. They also said they’ve been in touch with residents about it but didn’t provide us with a timeline of when the elevator would be working again.

Shartran says they just want it to be fixed.

“We are not trying to make trouble. We just want to be heard,” she said.
