Three JSO officers return fire on semi-truck driver on I-10

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Update, 5:30 p.m.: The ramp from U.S. 301 to Interstate 10 eastbound is now open. Crews are opening the detour on I-10 eastbound at SR 228; the road is opening after a 10 hour closure.

Update 11:35 a.m.: Around 7 a.m. Thursday morning, police arrived to a Pilot truck stop on US-301 in response to a reported shooting.

Police found one man who was shot dead and another was shot and still alive. Police said he was transported to a hospital.

A witness pointed out a semi-truck that they said was involved in the shooting to police. Officers tracked the truck down on I-10 East and found it stopped on the side of the highway.

As police approached the truck, shots rang out in their direction, striking patrol cars. Officers J. Dowling, S.C. Hackney and K-9 Officer Winfrey returned fire on the truck. None of the officers were hurt.

JSO said the driver of the semi-truck that fired on the officers was shot and taken to a hospital with critical injuries.

According to police, no other cars were hit.

JSO could not confirm whether any of the people involved in the shooting were local to Jacksonville or what trucking company the shooter worked for.

All three officers that returned fire on the semi-truck driver were wearing body cameras. This was the first officer-involved shooting for all three officers.

Original story: The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said I-10 Westbound has reopened following an officer-involved shooting that shut down the highway in both directions.

I-10 Eastbound is still closed.

JSO said no police were hurt during the shooting and a suspect was taken by helicopter to a local hospital.
