Winn-Dixie delivers 500 bags of groceries to essential workers during Random Acts of Kindness Day

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Wednesday is National Random Acts of Kindness Day and one Jacksonville-based company is giving back to help essential workers.

Winn-Dixie is giving back to the community by partnering with Wolfson Children’s Hospital and Baptist Health.

On Wednesday, the company delivered 500 bags of food to essential workers.

Phyllis Goggins works behind the scenes in Baptist Health’s environmental services.

“My job is to maintain cleaning the rooms at an efficient time to get the patients in,” Goggins said.

Luis Castillo works in the hospital’s plant facilities.

He told Action News Jax since COVID-19 hit, the work load has only gone up.

“Especially in the HVAC shop we have set up a lot of Covid rooms making them negative pressure so that they can meet standards for the air changes,” Castillo said.

And as a way to say thank you to all these employees Winn-Dixie is making sure they take a home bag of groceries to feed their families.

Each bag is filled with essential items for essential workers. Things like canned food, dry pasta, and cereal that could help a family during a difficult time.

Shawn Sloan, the Winn-Dixie North Florida Regional Vice President, told Action News Jax other businesses can do their part by paying it forward too.

“I think everybody should come together and really pay tribute to these local heroes and again, there’s essential workers, and then there’s heroes. The hospital workers. They’re essential heroes in our opinion,” Sloan said.

These essential workers have the jobs that help keep the hospital running at all times.

Goggins said this extra act of kindness is very appreciated.

“It makes us feel good, makes us feel like we’re a part of the team,” she said.

Southeastern Grocers said at least 40 of its stores throughout North Florida are also giving back by delivering bags of goodies to local schools, fire departments, and police stations.
