Duval Health Department preparing roll out of COVID vaccine as early as Christmas week

Jacksonville, Fl — As the first wave of COVID-19 vaccinations is underway for health care workers in NE Florida early this week, the Duval County Health Department is preparing for vaccinations in long term care facilities, perhaps as early as next week.

“A lot of that is going to be based on supply”, said Dr. Pauline Rolle, Director of the Florida Department of Health in Duval County.

16,000 doses of the Moderna vaccine will come to FDOH in Duval County, once it has received FDA approval. Dr. Rolle says those will be dedicated to health department employees, first responders and eventually, long term care facilities.

“We’re partnering the City of Jacksonville and JFRD to do that”, Rolle said.

Vaccinations will be offered to residents and workers at long term care facilities within the facility itself, instead of providing vaccinations in a medical setting.

Rolle said community vaccination is not likely to begin until the spring, and they are preparing for walk-up vaccination locations around Duval County.
