JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Early voting is underway in Northeast Florida counties, and tens of thousands of voters have already cast their ballots.

In Duval County, election leaders say early voting has gone smoothly so far, but some voters have reported problems with the touch screen on ExpressVote machines.

Duval Supervisor of Elections Jerry Holland said nearly 45,000 early voters in the county have already voted.

“What’s very important is we want you to have a smooth voting day,” Holland said.

Action News Jax tracked complaints online from Duval voters reporting a stubborn touchpad on the ExpressVote machine. The supervisor of elections has received a similar complaint.

“It could be the way you’re touching it, you know, but we want to make sure there’s not any problems with the equipment, so let us know immediately,” Holland said.

Duval election leaders demonstrated how voters should record their vote on the machine.

“The ExpressVote fills out your ballot for it. It does not tabulate. And what it also does is when it fills it out and prints it, you have the opportunity to look. If you see any mistakes on that, you can get another ballot, use another machine,” Holland said.

If voters have trouble selecting a candidate, they should use the stylus pen.

“If it doesn’t have a stylus, go to one that does have one. You know, because it accepts it just like an iPad does, works better with a stylus,” Holland said.

Election officials said voters should report any trouble with ExpressVote machines or any other way of recording their vote right away.

Duval election officials said they mailed more than 630,000 sample ballots, but they are still getting calls from people who have not received them.

“But we’re still getting calls from people saying, I haven’t got my sample ballot. Or maybe even one person in my household didn’t get it, and everybody else did. Unfortunately, it’s been an issue sometimes with the Postal Service,” Holland said.

Voters who have not received a sample ballot can go to duvalelections.gov and download their sample there.
