JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Edward Waters College is seeing a spike in the number of potential students.
The number of applications is up 70 percent, compared to the same time last year.
EWC sits in the heart of Northwest Jacksonville and the college is reaching out to more local students in our area. School officials already accepted more than 1,500 students for next fall compares to the 700 plus last year,
“Currently according to fall 2014 we're at 929 students,” said Joel Walker, director of admissions.
And that number is growing, “We’re probably 70 percent higher than the previous two years. We have a higher number of applications, a higher turn of number of admits,” said Walker.
Walker says that’s because of an effort they call "The Local Push." “We are really re-connecting with our local and surrounding counties, working with our Duval County School Board. We’re really getting the word out that EWC is here,” said Walker.
Walker says EWC went through a rough patch the last couple of years, when the school was put on probation, “We never lost accreditation, we were on probation,” said Walker.
Senior Shakayla Mayo says, within her time here, her school has come a long way, mainly because there are more academic majors being offered, “We have dreams of becoming an university.I think that will make our numbers stick and increase as well,” said Mayo.
The deadline for registration is July 31.
