JSO: Driver flees after causing crash injuring 6 children in West Jacksonville

The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office is looking for the driver of a white Nissan that fled the scene on foot -- after running a stop sign and injuring 10 people, including six children.

The crash happened Friday morning at West Palm Avenue and Norman E. Thagard Boulevard.

The driver ran a stop sign and hit a Ford Expedition traveling in the opposite direction, police said.

Police said the driver ran off -- leaving the Nissan involved at the scene.

Action News Jax Law and Safety expert Dale Carson said the investigation will begin with finding the driver of the white Nissan Altima. He argued it could be difficult to prove who exactly was driving the car at the time, but said the airbags could have evidence of DNA from the crash.

“If it's a newer car and has airbags, it is a sealed device, so any DNA that’s discovered on the airbag indicates that you were behind the wheel when it went off,” Carson said.

A description of the injuries have not been released at this time. Carson said the number of people hurt combined with the severity of their injuries could change the level of charges for the suspect.

“If you leave the scene of an accident with serious bodily injury or death you’re going to get the same penalty as if you were drinking when the accident occurred,” Carson said.

According to Jacksonville Fire and Rescue, one person had to be extricated from the SUV.

JFRD confirmed with our news partner, 104.5 WOKV that 10 people were injured.Six children were taken to UF Health and Baptist Hospital. According to JFRD, no one has critical injuries.

The Ford Expedition that was carrying nine people fell into a ditch. Anyone with information is asked to call police.
