JACKSOVNILLE, Fla. — Motorists are warned of multiple southbound lane closures on the Buckman Bridge from Friday night through Monday morning.

The Florida Department of Transportation cites these closures as part of the Buckman Bridge Safety and Signage Project, which was enacted to ensure increased driver safety on the bridge.

This project comes after a woman accidentally drove off the Buckman Bridge Tuesday morning as a result of poor signage and easy access to a dangerous area.

Jacksonville officials hope new signage and rehabilitated portions of the bridge will make it harder for something like that to happen again.

Crews are expected to close the three inside southbound lanes of I-295 from Feb. 25 at 8 p.m. to Feb. 28 at 4 a.m.

Motorists traveling on I-295 in the vicinity should expect delays and plan ahead.

In addition, FDOT wants to remind drivers that February is “hit-and-run” awareness month in Florida. When you flee the scene of a crash, you are breaking the law, which carries serious consequences. FDOT reminds motorists to take responsibility and stay at the scene of a crash.
