FDOT: Message boards potential solution for Buckman Bridge safety

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Action News has details of potential changes to the Buckman Bridge coming from a safety study of the structure.

It comes 2 weeks after an SUV was engulfed in flames on the bridge with a family trapped inside. A mother, two teens and a 6-year-old were killed.

Back in July, the driver of a truck died when he went over the edge after a crash. Now, the Florida Department of Transportation said message boards on the bridge could be installed to alert drivers when traffic slows or stops.

Placing them in the middle of the bridge could keep drivers from heading over the hill blindly. Drivers, such as Kim Amos, said changes are needed.

"There's nothing really out there to monitor what's going on. You're kind of on your own," Amos said.

FDOT said the company handling the study has all its data collected. Now, it's just a matter of presenting a plan to management.

They expect to have a plan presented to them by the end of April.
