JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A new roadway that is set to make your commute a little bit faster was the topic of conversation at a Florida Department of Transportation meeting on Monday night.
Leaders need input from the public before the third phase of construction on State Road 9B can begin.
FDOT said it has secured funding for the project, but now they need to get the public input from people who will be using this roadway.
Phase three of a five-phase plan to better connect commuters in Northeast Florida is almost complete.
Once it gets started, the $117 million project will connect 9B from Interstate 95 in Duval County to County Road 2209 in St. Johns County.
But first, FDOT engineers need to hear from drivers.
“(We need) to look at their input and go back and look at any design changes we may need to make,” said Ron Tittle, FDOT spokesperson.
Last September, phase one, connecting Interstate 295 east to U.S. 1 opened to the public. Right now, construction of phase two, which will connect U.S. 1 to I-95, is going on.
Roads can get congested in this area and this project is expected to alleviate that problem. Drivers we spoke to agree.
“I think it would make things a whole lot easier getting from point A to point B,” said driver Sheldon Cozart.
“It works great, it's a lot less traffic going that way and connecting to the rest of 295,” said driver Terry Sheffield.
Phase three is expected to begin in late 2015.
After the meeting, FDOT will take the public’s input and see if any changes need to be made.
