Florida Highway Patrol snags stolen box truck full of caskets in Jacksonville

Pictures released Monday by Florida Highway Patrol show David Ayers being put in the back of a patrol vehicle at MLK Parkway and Moncrief Road.

Neighbors said it isn’t unusual to see an arrest at the intersection.

Sheila Doyle told Action News Jax, “It’s not crazy because this neighborhood is known for the crime rate that it has. What’s crazy is what’s in the box truck.”

Doyle said, “It’s just nuts. How are you going to go to jail for stealing a casket? What’s wrong with you?”

According to troopers, JSO asked them to be on the lookout for the stolen truck.

Investigators said they intercepted it on I-295 but Ayers kept going until they caught him on the Westside.

“Utterly nonsense, especially when it come to stealing some caskets, I mean, come on,” said Doyle.

Ayers is charged with fleeing law enforcement officers, resisting without violence, and grand theft.

Doyle explained, “The community needs to come together more and claim our streets back and stop a lot of this. If we would all band together it would stop a lot or this nonsense.”
