Former Jacksonville officer shot at same bank where Thursday's bank robbery with hostages took place

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Thursday's bank robbery standoff where 13 hostages were held brought a lot of onlookers to the Community First Credit Union on Edgewood Avenue.

Action News Jax spoke exclusively with a former Jacksonville Sheriff's officer Eric Simmons, who watched the bank robbery unfold.

He said that 15 years ago, almost to the day, he was shot at the same location where Thursday's bank robbery happened.

“It was very strange to see on TV that within six days of the anniversary where I was shot, at the same credit union, that you had suspects inside holding hostages at the very same location,” Simmons said.

Simmons was shot in the leg.

“I knew I was outgunned at that time,” Simmons said.

But Thursday's bank robbery ended differently than his. Hostages got out safe and so did JSO officers.

The suspect in Thursday's bank robbery, 23-year-old Nicholas Humphrey, is behind bars.
