Founder of local charter schools facing fraud charges

The founder of two Jacksonville charter schools is facing fraud and racketeering charges.

According to prosecutors, Marcus May took more than $1 million in public money from the Department of Education and charter schools and used the money to buy homes and businesses in Florida and Ohio.

May is the owner of Newpoint Education Partners which founded and, at one time, managed San Jose Academy and San Jose Prep High School in Duval County.

May was first indicted for money laundering and grand theft last year, and then a month later local charter schools cut ties with the company.
