Foxes sighted in Ponte Vedra Beach, local counties

PONTE VEDRA, Fla. — A local woman spotted a red fox on Ponte Vedra Beach on Monday morning, and took a video of it.

“I’ve seen him three times before, and every time it was raining,” said Cyndi Rice. “That’s why I knew he’d be there today.”

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission reports that fox sightings aren’t common, but the animals do live here.

The agency said there have been two reported sightings in Duval County this year, two in Nassau County, and one in Clay County.

According to the Humane Society, foxes can live among us in cities, where scavenging for food makes their lives easy.

In that respect, they are similar to coyotes, another animal that, Action News Jax has reported, appears in the beach communities.

The Humane Society said foxes aren’t dangerous to humans, unless they’re rabid.

They may prey on small pets or livestock, so those animals should be kept inside.

Mashona Washington, who lives in Ponte Vedra Beach, told Action News Jax that pet owners who are responsible don’t have anything to worry about—whether it be foxes, coyotes or anything else.

“There’s a concern, but it’s just like everything else,” said Washington. “You’re careful with your pets when you walk them.”
