JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Deon Antwan Jerido, 16, is in jail facing several charges, including kidnapping and possession of a gun by a minor.
Elisha Freeman said Jerido is her grandson. She said he moved to Jacksonville from Atlanta after her daughter kicked him out of the house.
"He was giving his mother a hard time. He didn't want to go to school up there either," said Freeman.
According to Freeman, he had recently started hanging out with Daejanique Louisseize, 20, who lives near him.
"I asked her nicely to leave him alone, don't lead him on, because the boy in love, it's his first time," said Freeman.
JSO said around 10:30 p.m. Saturday, officers were called out to Acorn Park Court after witnesses heard a gunshot. Witnesses said Jerido got into a gray Dodge with Louisseize and her 1-year-old daughter still inside.
Police said he led them on a more than 13 mile chase, at times reaching speeds of 100 miles per hour and "disregarding the safety of others."
The chase ended when police said Jerido crashed, causing the car to roll over, on Plymouth Street near Roosevelt Boulevard.
"I'm worried about him, I kept telling the police I want you all to get him off the street because I don't want nobody to kill him," said Freeman.
Police have not released a motive in the case, but Freeman said she hopes this incident is a wake-up call for her grandson and said she's glad he's in jail.
"I am glad, in a way, I'm glad. I hate that it happened but I'm glad in a way because like I said I could sleep at night," said Freeman. "He's safe in there."
Louisseize and her daughter were taken to St. Vincent’s Hospital; they’re expected to recover.
Louisseize's step-dad spoke to Action News Jax over the phone. He called this a "bad incident" and they're still trying to get over it.
