Green Cove Springs, Fla. — A pilot from Green Cove Springs in Clay County was killed Monday after his plane crashed in Kentucky, according to The Federal Aviation Administration.
Kentucky State Troopers police identified the pilot and sole occupant of the single-engine plane as 62-year-old Timothy Michael Pankiewicz.
According to Trooper Gayheart with Kentucky State Police, just after 1:30 p.m., police received a call that an aircraft had crashed into a field and was on fire. Police located the downed aircraft fully engulfed in flames.
The Breathitt County Coroner’s Office responded to the scene and confirmed one person had died. Pankiewicz was transported to the Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy.
Investigators discovered Pankiewicz was traveling to Ohio.
The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the cause of the crash. The cause of the accident is still unknown at this time.
